disabling auto updates and other crap in firefox

4/5/22

I still use Firefox, but only because it's the least worst web browser.

Firefox used to be awesome. The version I was running for a long time was ESR 78, and the only reason I stopped using it is because some web sites started barking the "your browser is too old" thing at me, so I finally updated. Not to 99 but to ESR 91.

If I were desperate enough to stay with Firefox 78, I could use User-Agent Switcher and Manager to tell web sites I'm using version 99 instead of 78, but figured nah, I guess it's time to "upgrade", ugh...

For every update, Mozilla puts in new garbage that needs to be shut off/disabled, so this is the list of crap I do just to make the browser tolerable. I literally keep this in a file called "firefox crap.txt" just for my reference.

Add-ons to install

Settings > General

Settings > Search

Settings Privacy & Security

Importing favorites with favicons

Copy places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite to profile folder from old profile folder

Disabling auto-updates

Go to this folder or create if doesn't exist:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\distribution

Create file in that folder policies.json with this in it:

{
"policies":
   {
     "DisableAppUpdate": true
    }
}

Crap to change in about:config

Get rid of the awful proton look crap

Create folder in profile folder: chrome

Create file in chrome folder: userChrome.css...

...and put this in the file:

.titlebar-color{
color: -moz-accent-color-foreground;
background-color: -moz-accent-color;
}
.tab-background{
border-radius: 0px 0px !important;
margin-bottom: 0px !important;
}
.tabbrowser-tab:not([selected=true]):not([multiselected=true]) .tab-background{
background-color: color-mix(in srgb, currentColor 5%, transparent);
}
menupopup > menu, menupopup > menuitem{
padding-block: 2px !important;
min-height: 0px !important;
}
:root{
--arrowpanel-menuitem-padding: 2px !important;
}

Crap that I can't change (or probably could but don't feel like it)

The right-click context menu was changed. DELETE bookmark is now REMOVE, because evidently DELETE is just oh-so difficult for people to understand.

When hovering over menu items, it's now LOW CONTRAST gray instead of high contrast blue, because, y'know, style over function.

Bookmark folders were yellow and easy to see. Now they're just outlines and difficult to make out, because, y'know, style over function.

I would use Pale Moon, but...

When you want old-school Firefox with a modern engine, you get Pale Moon. I tried this. Nope.

The main issue with this browser is add-ons. True, it has add-ons you can use, and for that I'm thankful. But with the exception of uBlock, none of the add-ons I use are there, so nope, can't use it.

If you hate all the garbage that needs to be disabled in Firefox, Pale Moon is great if it has the add-ons that are useful to you.

Yeah, I'm on Firefox 91 now. I got it working in a way that's mostly tolerable.
